Parking Areas & Trailheads

Directions to common Adirondack hiking trailheads:

 

The Garden: Take Exit 30 of I-87 and head west on Route 73.  While driving north on 73 in Keene you will see a large DEC sign that reads “High Peaks Wilderness Area and Johns Brook” (it is adjacent to the Ausable Inn on the left side of the road).  Follow the DEC sign for 1.5 miles to the Garden and park.  When the parking lot is full, a shuttle runs until 7pm to & from Marcy Airfield (does cost $ and only accepts cash).


Adirondack Loj: Take Exit 30 of I-87 and head west on Route 73 for 26.5 miles. Turn left on Adirondack Loj Road and continue for five miles to the parking area.  Parking cost is $10/day.


St Hubert’s/Ausable Club:  Take Exit 30 of I-87 and head west on Route 73 for 7.5 miles to Ausable Road (a left hand turn).  The parking area is almost directly after you turn on the road.  Once parked, hike the the road along the golf course until you reach the wooden gate to Lake Road.  There is no fee to park.

**Dogs are not allowed on Ausable Mountain Club property**

Upper Works: Take Exit 29 off  Northway.  Turn WEST on Blue Ridge Road, Rte. 2.  Continue for just over 17 miles to an intersection (When we went there was a sign for “National Lead, Inc”).  Turn RIGHT.  After .4 miles you pass the intersection for Tahawus Club and a sign for Lower Works Road (shortly after that you cross railroad tracks).  After 6.3 miles turn LEFT on Upper Works Road.  At 8.2 miles you pass a turn-off that leads to the Santanoni Range trail head.  At 9.1 miles you will pass the old McIntyre furnace.  At 9.3 miles you pass the trail to Flowed Lands.  At 9.9 miles you reach the end of Upper Works Road.  The trail head is at the parking lot.


Seward Range Trailhead: Take the Northway to Exit 26 towards Pottersville/Minerva/US-9.  Turn West onto Valley Farm Road, and after 0.4 miles turn right onto US 9N.  Take the sligh left onto Olmstedville Rd, which turns into County Highway 29 after five miles.  After one mile turn left onto Main St and in 0.4 miles turn right onto Church Rd.  Church Rd continues on as Morse Memorial Highway.  After three miles, turn right onto NY-28N W.  After 33 miles, turn right onto NY-30N.  After 21.5 miles, turn right onto Stetson Rd.  Continue straight (in one mile) onto Hosley Ave.  In 0.5 miles turn right onto NY-3E/NY-30N.  After seven miles, take a slight right onto ADK Park Preserve, and in 0.2 miles turn right onto Coreys Road.  This becomes Ampersand Road.  At 5.8 miles you will see the Blueberry Foot Trail Trailhead — park here (no fee).

Elk Lake: Exit 29 on the Northway.  Turn left and go just over 4 miles, then turn right on Elk Lake Road.  The parking area is marked at the end of the road on the right.  There will be signs that it is private land, but the trailhead parking is at the end of the road.  The overflow parking is about three miles before you reach the parking lot.  Less than a 2 hour drive from Albany.


Porter & Cascade: Take Route 73 6.8 miles west of Keene.  The trailhead is about 300 meters west from the small lake in the pass.  Park at the Cascade trailhead.
